War-Funding Puzzlement (by Fred Thompson)

From the Paul Harvey show - a solid slam on the Left's useless posturing and pork laden "Emergency War Funding" bill. I keep hearing whispering of "Reagan Republican" again...

The House’s emergency war-funding bill contains several conditions on how the war should be run. They’ll never become law but they “send signals” they say. They’re big on sending signals in Washington. But what I was really surprised to find in the bill was what looked like $25 billion in pure pork. Since a lot of the people who voted for the bill campaigned against pork, I was puzzled.

I’m puzzled there’s $283 million for dairy farmers in an emergency war-funding bill. But there’s also $74 million for peanut farmers so, I figured our soldiers are eating a lot of peanut-butter sandwiches; they need more milk to wash them down with.

Hey, I’m trying to keep an open mind, here, okay?

Thirty-five years ago, Fred Thompson, then an obscure, young country lawyer from Tennessee, became a familiar face to millions of Americans engrossed in watching the historic drama of the Senate Watergate hearings unfold on television. The exposure he received as the Republican counsel to the committee investigating the scandal propelled him to a lucrative law practice, a substantial movie career in a string of popular, first-run films, then the U.S. Senate and finally a return to acting and private law practice.

Thompson's appearance on the scene seemed to stimulate a sudden burst of interest, particularly among the conservatives who view him as acceptable and among the moderates who point out that he has never been reactionary. Also, Baker is leading the Thompson draft, if that is what it can be called at this stage. The former Senate Republican leader's endorsement still carries a lot of weight among party regulars.

PowerLine (Romney backers), the guys who blew open Rathergate and the fake anti-Bush docs, have a quick take on Fred Thompson at their blog.

It's pretty obvious why he's getting consideration -- the Republican party is a conservative outfit but neither of its two leading presidential contenders is solidly conservative. That leaves a gap -- the space that George Allen or perhaps Bill Frist was expected to fill. Their absence gave Mitt Romney the opportunity to occupy the the conservative niche, and for me he does. However, many conservatives have their doubts on this score, or they doubt his electability. And even I have to admit that right now Thompson appears more electable than Romney.

Denver Post becoming aware of Fred Thompson

Surprised they noticed - and even more surprised they said a nice thing about him. I suppose the "Actor" label is all the liberals can come up with, but these guys do mention the time he spent as a "Staffer" (ahem, Watergate Chief Counsel folks!!). But hey, if a Conservative Republican can get a good word from the Denver Post editorial staff (usually very left), I'll take it.

And then there's Fred Thompson, the former congressional staffer and actor who became a U.S. senator and then went back to TV. He's being encouraged to run by Republicans who think he has "a blue-collar, pickup-truck appeal," as one report noted, that might lure independents and moderate Democrats.

Who knows? The last actor the Republicans nominated seemed to do OK.

Interesting that he had more votes than all the others combined in the first one, and beat native son Gingrich in both.

But the most interesting news came from the presidential straw poll, which had been tacked on to the end of the officer ballot, almost as an afterthought. The delegates were given a choice of a dozen or so candidates. None of the Presidential campaigns were represented at the convention.

The national frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani, placed third, right behind Georgia’s own Newt Gingrich, who finished second. But the winner was former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee, who received more votes than all the other candidates combined.

In what might be an early indication of the nation's thinking on the next Republican presidential nominee, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani won a straw poll Saturday night with 233 votes at the Summit County party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner in downtown Akron.

Giuliani's total was 31 percent of the 752 votes cast in the straw poll.

Finishing second with 194 votes, or 26 percent, was U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona. Former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee was third with 91 votes.

Wow, just wow! Maybe this is why the Romney folks at some blogs were going negative - their guy is not only not getting any traction, he seems to be losing it, whereas Fred Thompson, without any campaign at all, has passed him.

Well, the first round of Fred Thompson numbers continues to come in from state-level polls around the country. The latest numbers out from American Research Group show Mr. Thompson at 12% among likely Iowa caucus goers, beating Mitt Romney's 10%.

All in all, not looking bad for my prediction earlier this week that Mr. Thompson could catch up to Mr. Romney in the blink of an eye.

My Opinion: I wonder how Hugh Hewitt will handle this? He seems to be banging the drum incessantly for Romney (look at his posts they are laregly about Romney/Mormonism and little esle these days - nto toe metnion him pumping his Roomney-boosting book). I notice Hugh avoids mentioning Fred Thompson - its almost conspicuous by its absence. Its time Hugh woke up and went back to being neutral rather than a campaign organ for Romney. Jumped too soon, eh Hugh?

The first rounds of polls that include Fred Thompson are starting to show up - and things are looking suprisingly good for an undeclared canadidate with no campaign apparatus or ads.

Manchester – A new poll of New Hampshire voters suggests that Fred Thompson might undermine Republican front-runner Rudy Giuliani.

The American Research Group March 19 to 21 telephone poll of 800 likely GOP primary voters included several possible candidates who have not announced their plans.

In a February poll, Giuliani led the field with 27 percent, one point ahead of John McCain. In March, Giuliani slipped to 19 percent, four points behind McCain. Mitt Romney was supported by 17 percent.

Next in line were two unannounced candidates, Newt Gingrich at 11 percent and Thompson, who had not been part of earlier surveys, at 10 percent.

In spite of not even being declared, and not having an organized campaign nor even an exploratory committee (just us unorganized grabastic bloggers), Fred Thompson is polling EVEN with Romney in Ohio. Note that even Newt is up there. Of course he's trailing Giuliani and McCain by a lot, since Romney cannot seem to get traction for some reason unknown to me. Is there really that much of a boat anchor effect of Romney being a Mormon? I hope not.

The Quinnipiac University poll also found that former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani leads the Republican contenders among voters in Ohio, which tipped the 2004 election for President Bush. Giuliani is favored by 31 percent of Republicans, compared with 20 percent for Sen. John McCain, 8 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 6 percent each for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson.

Washintgon -- The "Draft Fred Thompson" for president committee is legally formed, accepting donations and seeking volunteers and VIPs for its bandwagon, Treasurer Dean Rice said.

Rice, who works in Knoxville and ran Thompson's East Tennessee field office for nearly four years when he was a senator, was a Southern coordinator for Elizabeth Dole's 2000 presidential campaign. He also worked for Duncan in his Knoxville field office for nearly four years before joining a government relations company.

Rice said he hopes that the www.fred08.com Web site will help attract enough Thompson supporters and public attention to convince Thompson to run. Thompson's nationally televised appearance March 11 on Fox News helped stoke the Thompson buzz among Republicans in some parts of the country.

The draft campaign is accepting donations up to $2,300 per person to build up its Web site and pay for ads or promotional material to drive many folks to check out the Thompson Web site and consider backing him.

Rice said the draft committee, legally formed with a filing at the Federal Election Commission, cannot be coordinated or connected with Thompson. So, Rice said he didn't talk to Thompson about forming the committee.

Mainstream press begins their attacks: Just an Actor?

Looks like Bill Hobbs has figured out how the mainstream press will try to denigrate and defeat Fred Thompson

Thompson, the LAT said, "positioning himself to answer the call and, perhaps, follow the script that saw Ronald Reagan jump from Hollywood to the White House."

Actually, Reagan didn't "jump from Hollywood to the White House." He was a successful and popular two-term governor of California in between his acting career and his presidency.

Likewise, Thompson is not just an actor who plays conservative leader types on TV and the silver screen. He's not even primarily an actor, and unlike Reagan, acting was not even his first career.

Thompson was, at first, an attorney and prosecutor - real-life roles with major accomplishments that lead him, through a quirk of fate, to a second career as an actor.

The NY Sun is running an article on why Romney's campaign is worried about FDT

... Mr. Thompson's a threat to every candidate for the Republican nomination.

But there's one candidate whose campaign he could end almost instantaneously, should he choose to run: that of Mr. Romney. Mr. Thompson is pro-life, pro-gun, anti-gay marriage, and anti-tax — like Mr. Romney. But he has one advantage over the former governor: He didn't just come to these positions over the last year or so, in a "Road to Des Moines" conversion.

On virtually every issue, Mr. Thompson is as far right, or further, than Mr. Romney, and he has been for some time.

...

"With the current field, there is, as of now, some difficulty in getting economic, foreign policy, and social conservatives all on the same page," Mr. Bauer said. "So, in view of that, I would like to see Thompson throw his hat in. … I think he'd have a reasonable chance of getting support from all three of the legs of the stool President Reagan put together."

And as Mr. Thompson appeals to social conservatives, there's nothing immediately evident that should disqualify him with fiscal conservatives.

"Generally speaking, he had a pretty fiscally conservative record," the head of the Club for Growth, Pat Toomey, told me yesterday. "There's still something approaching a void in the center of the Republican ideological spectrum. … The guy who could be dominating the center, but isn't, is Mitt Romney."

"If this void continues, then somebody like a Fred Thompson could become a first-tier candidate rather quickly," Mr. Toomey said.

You might be interested in Fred Thompson on the issues. He's not as well known issue-wise as perhaps Giuliani and McCain. He's maybe on a par with Mitt Romney. But here's just a little summary of his position on various issues. He's pro-life. He believes that federal judges should overturn Roe vs. Wade. (He thinks it's bad law and bad medical science.) He opposes gay marriage but would let states decide whether to allow civil unions. He says marriage is between a man and a woman; judges shouldn't be allowed to change that. He opposes gun control. He praised last week's 2-1 federal appeals decision overturning a long-standing handgun ban in the District of Columbia. His remark was basically the court said the Constitution means what it says. He supports the surge, the increase of troops to Iraq, and said, "Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify them. I think we're doing that now. We've got to give it a chance to work."

He said he would pardon Scooter Libby on his conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice, and he would do it now rather than waiting until all of his appeals are exhausted. I got a bunch of e-mails from people over the weekend after this had been announced that were very excited. Look, this is anecdotal. I'm not saying this means anything. I'm just sharing with you some of the reaction. I haven't gotten it about any of the others. The closest to it would be Giuliani, I guess, but not in the scope of what I got from people talking about Fred Thompson. He is thought to be authoritative with a lot of presence and so forth and so on. It gets more and more interesting out there. Then in the Prowler at the American Spectator.org: "'Anyone who doubts that [former Sen.] Fred [Thompson] isn't the real deal needs to look at his performance on Sunday and rethink things,' says a senior Republican National Committee official. 'You can't watch him or read the transcript and wonder what the dynamic would be like with him in the race.' He's referring to Thompson's appearance on Fox News Sunday, where, unlike candidates like Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain, Thompson has no problem addressing where he stood on issues from abortion, gun control, and campaign finance reform. 'It isn't just Fred,' says the RNC official. 'You see and hear [former Gov.] Jeb [Bush] and you realize what the GOP field is missing. You see those two guys and you want to vote for them. With most of the guys in the race now you just feel like eventually you're going to have to vote for them simply out of party loyalty.'"

Its just an except, be sure to read the whole NRO article and go to Paul Harvey and listen - perfect delivery of a solid message.

Hey guys, you’re our friends and neighbors and we love you but it’s time you had a little dose of reality. A sovereign nation loses that status if it cannot secure its own borders and we are going to do whatever is necessary to do so, although our policies won’t be as harsh as yours are along your southern border. And criticizing the U.S. for alternately doing too much and too little to stop your illegal activities is not going to set too well with Americans of good will who are trying to figure a way out of the mess that your and our open borders policy has already created.

My friends, it’s also time for a little introspection. Since we all agree that improving Mexico’s economy will help with the illegal-immigration problem, you might want to consider your own left-of -center policies. For example, nationalized industries are not known for enhancing economic growth. Just a thought. But here’s something even more to the point that you might want to think about: What does it say about the leadership of a country when that country’s economy and politics are dependent upon the exportation of its own citizens?

More on the growing interest in FDT 08 - by a pollster no less... the article gets into more detail regarding Giuliani, Romney, etc.

If Thompson runs — at least on paper — he has the potential to win the Republican nomination and the White House, unlike the other non-front-runners, who for one reason or another appear unlikely to make the cut as presidential material.

He could run as a common sense Washington outsider with Ronald Reagan-class communications skills. Thompson's name recognition is still limited, but his celebrity means his face recognition is unusually high and very favorable.

"He'd have instant credibility within the party and would be a very formidable candidate against any Democrat in November," said former U.S. Sen. and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, who is neutral in the nomination fight. "He has a very solid conservative record, but like Reagan, he has been able to charm many who may not agree with him on every issue."

Bob Beckel, who managed 1984 Democratic nominee Walter Mondale's campaign, called Thompson potentially a Democratic electoral nightmare because of his communications skills and ability to appeal to swing voters.

Will primary timing problems hurt Thompson candidacy?

This may be a reason FDT needs to go sooner rahter than later - Giulianai and Romeny are starting to get to the point where they will starve everyone else for funding, now that the big primaries look to be all in a lump. No time to build momentum like Reagan did. This is worrisome for an outsider candidate.

The move to February 5 would not be so pernicious if California alone were doing so. But most of the large states are accelerating their primaries as well. So we will have a super-duper primary and, bang, the nominee will have been chosen right then and there. Whom does super-duper primary help? In the case of the GOP it helps Rudolph W. (Rudy) Giuliani, assuming he can keep the poll numbers he now has. Rudy is the big-money candidate. Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), Senator Charles T. (Chuck) Hagel (R-NE), Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AK), Congressmen Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Ron Paul (R-TX) and Thomas G. (Tom )Tancredo (R-CO) will have absolutely no chance under this system. On the Democratic side, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM), Senators Christopher J. Dodd (D-CT) and Joseph P. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) and former Senator John Edwards (D-NC) also will be relegated to has-beens under this new system because Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) has the money. In fact, it is doubtful that Governor Ronald W. Reagan (R-CA) could have come back from his earlier defeats, as he did in 1976 in North Carolina. He would require a huge sum of money to win on this super-duper primary system. And since Reagan was defeated in New

Hampshire by incumbent President Gerald R. Ford (R-MI), he would not have been able to raise in a few days the huge amount of money required of a defeated candidate.

Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn) said Monday that former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is very likely to run for president.

The Third District congressman told the Chattanooga Pachyderm Club, "I had a follow-up conversation with Fred Thompson, and there is a real, real strong possibility that he will run."

Rep. Wamp said he has already lined up over 40 members who are interested in the Thompson candidacy.

Rep. Wamp said he and Rep. John Duncan will be co-chairmen of a committee designed to encourage Thompson to seek the Republican presidential nomination.

They will lead the "Draft Fred Thompson 2008" committee.

A graduate of Memphis State University and Vanderbilt Law School, Thompson served as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1969 through 1972, when he resigned to manage Sen. Howard Baker's successful re-election campaign. Afterward he served as co-chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee, and was the one responsible for Sen. Baker's asking of the critical question, "What did the President know, and when did he know it?" But it was Thompson himself who asked the question which actually led to the unraveling of the Watergate coverup: "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?"

In 1977, Thompson continued his career as a crusading prosecutor on the state level with a case which ended up toppling pardon-selling Tennessee Gov. Ray Blanton from office. His entry into show business came when the producers of a movie based on the case, "Marie," were unable to find an actor capable of portraying Thompson as effectively as Thompson himself.

Sen. Thompson has played many roles in the movies and on television, including a White House chief of staff, a Director of Central Intelligence, a rear admiral, an FBI official- and even a U.S. senator! As a 1994 New York Times article put it, "When Hollywood directors need someone who can personify governmental power, they often turn to him."

Not surprising. Thompson exudes leadership. All he has to do is play himself.

In 1994, Thompson was elected to fill the unexpired senate term of Vice-President Al Gore. Defeating Democratic Congressman Jim Cooper by a margin of 61% to 39%, in that election Thompson received more votes than any other Tennessee candidate had ever previously received in a statewide race. Re-elected by an even bigger margin to a full term in 1996, Thompson served as first chair and later ranking minority member of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. As committee chair, Thompson led the investigation into the campaing finance scandal arising from alleged Chinese government contributions to various Democratic candidates.

After initially indicating his intention to seek re-election in 2002, Thompson changed his mind. Some speculate that the death of his daughter may have played a role. Sen. Thompson is perhaps best known today as Distict Attorney Arthur Branch on the television series "Law and Order." He served in an informal capacity as "shepherd" of the nomination of Chief Justice John Roberts through the U.S. Senate in 2006, and serves as a conservative commentator on ABC Radio.

Widely expected to run for governor of Tennessee in 2006, Sen. Thompson decided against it. But now, at a time when none of the Republican candidates for the White House have captured the imagination of the American people, Sen. Thompson has let it be known that he is considering entering the race himself.

Who are these guys who are getting all flushed over our cultural insensitivity?

People who want to blow Jews off the face of the earth. The regime that stormed our embassy in 1979 and kept Americans captive for 444 days. Iran’s Hezbollah puppets have killed more Americans, than any other terrorist group except al Qaeda. Explosive devices from Iran are being used right now against our soldiers in Iraq. They’re clearly more skittish about cultural warfare than the sort that actually kills people — like the one against Israel that Iran financed just a few months ago.

Finally, a Republican Candidate I WANT to vote for

I am tired of voting Republican mainly because the other candidates are worse.

So what am I faced with now for Republicans in 2008?

Giuliani is a product of 9/11 - prior to it, he was only marginally Republican (certainly not conservative) and headed into tough waters as Mayor of NYC. His social views do not differentiate him from the Democrat candidates much at all, so if I want those views in office, why not vote Hillary or Obama and get the real thing?

McCain is too embedded in Washington DC inside-the-beltway politics and K-Street. His is also getting a bit older, and (my opinion only) seems to have this sense of entitlement and a temper when it gets denied. He wasn't the right candidate in 2000, and isn't the right person now.

Romney appears to me to simply be an opportunist who will change his stripes to fit the occasion. Plus, like it or not, his religion will be an issue. The whispering is already ongoing and will turn vicious once the Democrats start in on him with the bucket of dirty tricks by front organizations (like those funded by Soros).

So I am voting in self defense if any of those make it. Not out of passion, but of duty to ensure that we have a president that will at least be serious about winning "the long war", the war on terror.

But, in the famous words of Yoda... "there is another..."

Fred Thompson in his words and his record represents the type of person I want as a president.

This should help you decide if he is the kind of candidate you want to vote for instead of have to vote for. I know it has done so for me.
